Integrating analogical mapping and general problem solving: the path-mapping theory
نویسندگان
چکیده
This article describes the path-mapping theory of how humans integrate analogical mapping and general problem solving. The theory posits that humans represent analogs with declarative roles, map analogs by lower-level retrieval of analogous role paths, and coordinate mappings with higher-level organizational knowledge. Implemented in the ACT-R cognitive architecture, the path-mapping theory allows models of analogical mapping behavior to incorporate and interface with other problem-solving knowledge. Path-mapping models thus can include task-specific skills such as encoding analogs and generating responses, and can make behavioral predictions at the level of real-world metrics such as latency or correctness. We show that the path-mapping theory can successfully account for the major phenomena addressed by previous theories of analogy. We also demonstrate a path-mapping model that can account for subjectsÕ incremental eye-movement and typing behavior in a story-mapping task. We discuss extensions and implications of this work to other areas of analogy and problem-solving research. Salvucci & Anderson, Integrating Mapping and Problem Solving 3

متن کاملGraph Convergence for H(.,.)-co-Accretive Mapping with over-Relaxed Proximal Point Method for Solving a Generalized Variational Inclusion Problem
In this paper, we use the concept of graph convergence of H(.,.)-co-accretive mapping introduced by [R. Ahmad, M. Akram, M. Dilshad, Graph convergence for the H(.,.)-co-accretive mapping with an application, Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc., doi: 10.1007/s40840-014-0103-z, 2014$] and define an over-relaxed proximal point method to obtain the solution of a generalized variational inclusion problem ...
متن کاملImproving Source Selection in Analogical Reasoning An Interactionist Approach
The success of any analogical reasoner depends upon its ability to select a relevant source. We can improve source selection by more completely integrating the process of source retrieval with analogical inference, and by using experience in solving target problems to find properties that effectively predict a source’s relevance to future targets. This paper describes the design and evaluation ...
متن کاملMathematical problem solving by analogy.
We report the results of 2 experiments and a verbal protocol study examining the component processes of solving mathematical word problems by analogy. College students first studied a problem and its solution, which provided a potential source for analogical transfer. Then they attempted to solve several analogous problems. For some problems, subjects received one of a variety of hints designed...
متن کاملCausal Models Interact with Structure Mapping to Guide Analogical Inference
We recently proposed a theoretical integration of analogical transfer with causal learning and inference (Lee & Holyoak, 2008). A Bayesian theory of learning and inference based on causal models (Lee, Holyoak & Lu, 2009) accounts for the fact that judgments of confidence in analogical inferences are partially dissociable from measures of the quality of the mapping between source and target anal...
